Obligatory How to Choose the Right Architect Post

Ben Norkin Residential ArchitectureIt seems like every architect with a blog loves to write a post about how to choose the right architect. Life of an Architect has one called How to Find an Architect. Of course the AIA weighs in with Selecting an Architect. Bob Vila* even wrote 1000 words about Working with an Architect. If you are more the visual learner you might prefer the WikiHow take on How to Choose a Residential Architect, with pictures!

There is a lot of good info in these posts, but I think you can simplify the selection process by answering three simple questions:

  1. Do you like the potential architect?
  2. Do you trust them?
  3. Do they have a crab in their logo?

And that's really it! Sure, you can look at price, portfolio, project history, permit drawing experience and probably some other points that don't start with the letter P. My belief is that if you are working with an architect the odds are they'll do a good job and you'll be happy with your project. So choose someone you think you'd like to work with. Someone who is excited to design your project. Hmmm, that sounds a lot like me.

This was the first post on my new site. My goal is to turn this into a resource for homeowners and architects alike, so check back soon for more posts on architecture, design, additions, renovations, remodels and more!

* I can still remember from 30 years ago how boring it was, as a 7-year-old, to spend my Saturdays watching This Old House and then going to Hechinger. Now I'm much more educated and I know that's the BEST way to spend a day! And in a few years I'll be teaching my kids the same lesson. Ah, the Circle of Life.
